Artist Statement

The hills surrounding Schneckenhausen, Germany have become my muse. The 600 year old village near Kaiserslautern is tucked into gently rolling grain fields and grazing land topped with deep green forests. When the bells of the village cathedral toll the sheep on the nearby hill are disturbed and bleat in reply. The village is closely connected to the land. One can walk or bike ride myriad paths from village to village. I am fascinated by the notion that man has lived and farmed this area for hundreds of years and it remains unspoiled and fertile. These paintings have evolved from small watercolors I painted during the summer of 2007 and from my memory of walking the hills.
